Winning Blimp specialises in sci-fi themed games that pay homage to the classic 16-bit games of the Nintendo SNES, Sega Genesis (Megadrive) and Commodore Amiga. Based in both Osaka Japan and Florida USA, Winning Blimp is headed by Bear Trickey, a former game designer from Kyoto-based studio Q-Games, and Alex May, a multi-discipline graphic artist and musician.
Today we’d like to deliver some news regarding Stratolith, our electronic warfare simulator. Sadly, we’ve decided to temporarily cease active development. We may pick it up again in the future, but for the moment, we regretfully declare Stratolith as “parked”.
It’s not a decision either of us are particularly happy about; we both pride ourselves on being people who finish what we start, so the fact that it has come to this is disappointing to say the least.
There has been a great deal of change in both our lives over the past few years. We’ve both seen the arrival of second children in our respective families, there’s been the increasing demands of our day-jobs and fatherhood, and also long-distance relocation plans firmly in motion for both of us. Free time has been at an absolute premium, and it hasn’t helped that Stratolith is our most ambitious and development-heavy project yet. The reality is that there’s still a fair way to go for Stratolith, so rather than announce yet another delay for the release we decided that it’d be better to put development on indefinite hold while we regroup and recoup.
So what is next for us? As always we’ve got a huge surplus of ideas and prototype game designs, so right now the focus is going to be on working out which one of these is the best fit for our changing lifestyles. Stratolith isn’t currently a good fit, but there is no doubt that one of our new ideas will be. We’re absolutely committed to furthering our working relationship together as Winning Blimp, so watch this space! The Blimp will win in the end, that we’re sure of.

We’re sorry to say that Stratolith is going to be delayed.
This year has seen a veritable dirigible of positive developments on and off the Blimp – it started in March when we won the sound design award at BitSummit, and then culminated in both of us having welcomed second babies into our respective families later in the year. This has drained development time away from the Stratolith project, so we regretfully announce that Stratolith is not going to be out by winter 2014 as we had first hoped.
However, we can report that Stratolith has never looked or played better. It’s getting there slowly, but surely. We have new features, refined gameplay mechanics, improved interfaces, a reworked backstory, and new art from Rickard Westman of the incredible Swedish game company Vision Trick (check out their upcoming PS4 title Pavilion).
So we hope to have Stratolith into your hands by early to mid 2015, all being well! To tide you over until release, we’ve put together a rapid walkthrough of Stratolith’s core gameplay elements. Enjoy!

Stratolith is a real-time electronic warfare simulator that’s centered around hacking and repurposing drones to defend your floating city from Stratopeian superpowers. It will be available for PC and tablet devices in Winter 2014. Stratolith is a departure from the safe shallow waters of casual smartphone gameplay, and a James Cameron submarine dive straight into the crushing depths of hardcore gaming.
